Taken from GDS, they reported on the Miccoli story first.
Grosso is a bit old now though.

He would definatly be a good signing at left back but would only last for a couple of seasons at the age of 32 so he wouldnt realy be a long term solution.

I don't think a short term option is that much of a bad thing though. If we have the talent coming from the youth ranks then a couple of years with an old-timer at the club can't be that bad a thing. I imagine that Jordan Mutch is benefiting from having Ferguson and Bowyer around as guidance.

The encouraging thing here is that:

a) The Gazetta Del Sport was bang on when it came to reporting the Miccoli affair.

B) Italians can defend. Years of watching the ultra-dull Serie A has taught us all this.

c) He's coming from a club of obvious pedigree.

The only thing I can think of that might hinder is that he probably doesn't speak much English, and there's no other Italians in the side to help him settle.

That's what you'd hope but when have we EVER nutured talent from the youth ranks? For all the promise that these players show, Blues forever seem incapable of honing them into first team players, thus I'm not a fan of these short term deals.

In recent times we've even scouted and signed youth players that are showing potential at other clubs (Shroot, O'Shea), only to see them waste away in the reserves and in utterly pointless loan deals to lower league teams.

If we're building for the future as the powers that be keep reiterating, then we need to lower the average squad age and we're not going to do that if we keep signing 30+ year olds. Of course they could always try sticking their neck out once in a while in an attempt to blood the youth players in earlier, giving them ample first team opportunities, but I really don't think AMc is willing to take that risk.

I had a look at the newspaper site mentioned and I can't find anything at all. In fact do a search on Birmingham, no search results come up at all.

Ahh, you'd think that would hinder him but our managing team are Scottish and our owners are Chinese even if he learns English he'll be burger vanned!

Juve are looking to offload 4 players to bring in a big new signing - amongst these offloads are Poulsen to Liverpool? and Grosso to Blues on loan or to Bologna on a permanent transfer. Source Gazetto dello Sport.

32 years, World Cup winner, 6ft 3 tall. Played with Juve, Lyon, Palermo amongst others. Cut from Italy last 23 for 2010 World Cup.

The Australian Blues fans might not like this one .... Grosso is the bar steward who dived in the 2006 World Cup round of 16 to earn the penalty in the dying seconds which knocked the Aussies out.

Grosso is still a dirty word over here ... a bit like N'Gog is at St Andrews.

The Grosso story is in tomorrows Daily Mail too.

Saying we are hoping to get him on loan (can't complain with that) with Lyon contributing to his high wages ideally.

KRO  :Blues:

Despite my early sceptisisim (is that spelt right) of mine, it does seem from the Daily Mail report that a serious approach has been made for the Roman star on loan. I think we should all take note so here it is in full:

Birmingham have lined up an ambitious bid to land Italian World Cup winner Fabio Grosso.

Blues boss Alex McLeish is eager to sign the Juventus left-back, 32, on a season-long loan.

Grosso converted the deciding penalty as Italy beat France in the 2006 World Cup final. However he was axed from their squad before this summer's finals.

Signed from French side Lyon only last summer, the Rome-born defender has fallen out of favour at the Stadio delle Alpi.

"Birmingham are now in a race with Bologna, who also want him on loan for a season.

Grosso has won 48 caps. He can also operate on the left wing, and has played top-level football for the last decade with Perugia, Palermo, Inter Milan, Lyon and Juve.
He helped Inter lift the Serie A crown in 2007, and won the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France with Lyon a year later.

The 6ft 2ins ace is on £1.6m a season. But McLeish now hopes to agree a deal that sees the Turin club fund part of Grosso's salary in order for him to move to St Andrews"

My worry here is that the propect of this Grosso loan deal, which is obviously one of the loan deals McLeish intimated he was considering before Blues left China, may be a stop gap and fill in postion for next season because there's no way we can afford his wage for any further acquisition, which would suggest that Big Eck has given up the ghost on Nathaniel Clyne because of the balking intransigence of the Palace manager! as Blues have already done with the over-priced and over-rated likes of Charles N'Zogbia and the lazy, gready Aids McGeady!

God I hope not! :break:

Of course they are! :banghead:

Sorry about that guys I made the same error once before on a post about Koncheski for when I visualise our back four my perspective is always towards our own goal where my left is the squads right, hence the mix up!

And there's me thinking it was such a clever post! tomatoes

But back on this planet..., I'm happy with the return of Murphy atm for he's done well in our pre-season and with the cover of Liam Ridgewell it think whatever proportion of his 1.6 Million salary we would have to pay to the Roman if the loan came off could be better spent on a improved offer for Nathaniel Clyne who btw can also play at LB.

i think it would be a great signing.

he was probably their best player when Italy won the world cup in 2006. if he can rediscover that kind of form, or even close to it, then we would have a world class left back on our books.

don't mess around, just sign him up quick.

I remember the backlash from the fans when he was placed in the provisional squad of 30 men or however many it is, and then when Marcello Lippi trimmed it down to 23 and dropped Grosso.

That, alongside not picking Fabrizio Miccoli, were probably his first two major mistakes.
